The Admirals and Combines played game 1 in a best 2 out of 3 series for the NSP A Championship in this Tuesday 7:45PM game.
The game started exactly like the last time these two teams faced off with the Combines sitting the Admirals batters down in order.
Thankfully, the bottom half of the inning didn't play out the same way. After a Combines lead off single, the Admirals managed to escape the inning unscathed.
In the 2nd, the Admirals got on the board thanks to a Ryan solo home run to left field. A Jomo walk followed by two base hits doubled the score and the Admirals held a slim 2-0 lead going into the bottom of 2 where it was the Admirals turn to sit the Combines' batters down in order.
In the top of the 3rd, the Combines followed suit, quickly returning to bat after again sitting the Admirals batters down in order, but in the home half, the Admirals again held the Combines to a tasty donut.
In the 4th, the Admirals doubled their score thanks to a 2-run double by Ryan and again held the Combines to a tasty donut to make the score 4-0 Admirals going into the 5th.
Anyone who knows softball knows a 4 run lead is by no means a comfortable lead. And anyone who knows the NSP Combines knows their sticks can't be held down for THAT long.
Well after holding the Admirals to a tasty donut, the Combines' sticks finally got going. A lead off double, followed by a stand up triple and a single and the Combines had cut their deficit in half. A single, a fly out and a walk later, and the Combines had bases loaded with 1 out looking to bust this one open.
The tension at this point was felt in both dugouts and in both bleachers as most in attendance had bitten their nails down to their 2nd knuckle.
But a hard hit grounder to 2nd base allowed the Admirals to turn the 4-6-3 double play to escape the inning without further damage.
In the 6th, the Combines again held the Admirals off the scoreboard and plated another run to cut their deficit to one.
The Admirals managed to get that run back and held a very slim 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the 7th, needing 3 daunting outs to come away victorious.
Two fairly quick outs followed by single and the tying run was at the plate.
Thankfully, a Combines comeback was not meant to be on this night as a deep 2 strike fly ball that was flirting with the left field foul line was tracked down by Jomo to seal the win.
Not much time to celebrate as the teams get right back at tonight in game 2 of the series.
When the team got back to the parking lot for post-game bevies, the skies opened up and a downpour ensued. But that did not dampen the celebratory mood of the team.
Until, in a possible attempt to punctuate his ongoing contract holdout for the 2018 season, Grambo announced to the team the reason for his impending absence for game 2 by changing into the following attire:
A disheartened Grambo later showed his desire to avoid missing game 2 by changing into the attire below and began a violent, yet hysterical dance, in what the team later realized was his attempt to keep the downpour going well into Wednesday for the eventual rain out.
Ironically, the rain stopped abruptly after a few minutes of his dance. :(
